New Year’s Resolutions, Pause, Reflect and Advance

Jan 26, 2026 | News & Events

This time of year, many of us turn inward and start setting goals for the new year.

But there’s a quiet trap in “new year, new me” thinking. If your resolution starts from what’s wrong, it can create pressure, shame, and a sense that you’re always behind.
Dr. Kim Dobson, Clinical Assistant Professor, Department of Psychiatry, Jacobs School of Medicine and Biomedical Sciences at the University at Buffalo and Psychiatrist with UBMD Psychiatry reminds us to shift the starting point.

Dr. Kim Dobson says, “I would encourage this time as a chance to reflect on opportunities for growth and gratitude rather than focusing on our perceived shortcomings that are in need of correction. Pause, Reflect, and Advance.”
