Specialty/Research Focus

I specialize in the evaluation and treatment of psychiatric disorders across the female life cycle and how hormonal fluctuations during different phases of women’s life span including perinatal period, menstrual cycle, perimenopause affect their mental health.

Professional Summary

I am an Assistant Professor of Psychiatry and this year, I will complete my 10 years with the department. I primarily practice at the outpatient clinic where I treat all adults between the ages of 21-65 years. I also work at Buffalo General Hospital as a consultation liaison psychiatrist. In the past few years, I have also had the opportunity to become involved in two research projects involving women’s mental health.

Women’s mental health is a field of special interest for me. Early on in my career, I became interested in this field and have pursued it since starting my practice. My area of expertise includes evaluation and treatment of psychiatric disorders across the female life cycle including perinatal period, menstrual cycle and perimenopause related disorders, infertility, and pregnancy loss. I plan to continue to advance my knowledge in the field on women’s health.

I am involved in medical student and resident education and enjoy introducing them to the fundamentals of women’s mental health and encouraging them to recognize the special challenges involved in this field.

I have been serving as a perinatal psychiatrist with Project Teach for the past 2 years. It is a New York State funded program with a mission to provide education and support for primary care physicians providing mental health care to pregnant and postpartum women.

This year, I also had the opportunity to become a member of the EMPOWER study team. It is a multi-center study including University of Massachusetts and Yale University. Together with the University of Buffalo, Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, we aim to provide care for pregnant women in the underserved communities in Western New York region.
The ability to practice in different settings has given me the opportunity to serve different populations and it has been a very rewarding experience.

Personal Statement

When not practicing psychiatry or spending time with my family and my dogs, you will find me trying to learn a new skill. I learned how to swim as an adult. I started learning skiing a few years back and am still learning. I began hiking with my family last summer and looking forward to doing it this summer. I garden during summer and read mainly fantasy fiction during winter. I recently signed up for some tennis lessons for me to be able to enjoy it with my family.

I recognize I will never be proficient at any of these skills but the frustrations of small failures and the joys of small achievements has been wonderful in making memories. My family gets to feel pride in these small successes as I do in their learning journey. I look forward to adding a few more skills to my list in the coming years.
